The current crisis of the coronavirus is making it very difficult for the night to rest: almost half of the Spaniards (44%) do not enjoy a quality dream and 41% do not sleep the hours necessary for the body and mind to recover, according to their study ‘Cigna Covid-19 Global Impact’

Sleep is essential for well-being, as a quality rest strengthens the immune system, improves brain activity and reduces the risk of mental disorders such as stress, anxiety, or depression. However, since the pandemic broke out, insomnia has increased considerably, coming to appear coronasomnia, that is, the inability to reconcile sleep due to the effects of the pandemic.

According to the study ‘Cigna Covid-19 Global Impact1almost half of the Spaniards (44%) do not enjoy a quality dream and one 41% do not sleep the hours necessary for the body and the mind to be replenished. And it is that these months of uncertainty or the alteration of the habits of life, together with the fear of illness or isolation, are fostering disorders such as sadness, discouragement, apathy or, even, stress or anxiety, which are negatively impacting on the integral health of people and encouraging the appearance of anomalies such as the pandemic fatigue. In fact, as shown in the study ‘Cigna COVID-19 Global Impact1’, 81% of the Spaniards are stressed, being uncertainty for the future one of the main causes of stress (49%), followed by the possibility of contracting COVID-19 (46%).

Another of the most worrying consequences of this lack of sleep is that not resting enough affects the response of the antibodies and therefore can reducing vaccine effectivenessas evidenced by the report Sleep in the time of COVID-19 developed by Cigna Europa2. For this reason, now more than ever, it is necessary to think about health from a holistic approach, taking into account all the pillars that influence well-being and which, therefore, can affect the sleep quality (health care, social context, family environment, personal economy, work, private life and physical and mental well-being).
