According to El CoCo, the application of analysis of pionera food products in Spain, among the products that most doubt generate consumers are those related to breakfast: cocoa powder, cereals, mould bread or both the different types of milk (semidesnatada, no lactose, etc.) as well as several of the vegetable drinks (avena, soya, coco, etc.)

This category represents half of the 100 most scanned products by users The Coco in the last three months. And that without having some sausages or cocoa creams to untar, which also appear in this Top 100. Secondly, the soda would be, especially the tails, on their sides with and without sugar. In total, 48% of the most scanned breakfast products are ultraprocessed.

Ultra-processed breakfasts
“We recommend, whenever there are doubts, use the application. The messages in the packaging often deceive, so that we can be convinced to make good choices and at the same time be wrong”, recalls Jean-Baptiste Boubault, co-founder of El CoCo. “And almost always, for every unhealthy option there is one that is, that’s why we should look and check, until we get the brands that offer us, really, what they’re trying to sell.”

Thus, returning to breakfast, it is found that although most milks are minimally processed or NOVA 1, there are also others that appear as processed. While among the vegetable drinks, although they are mostly ultraprocessed (NOVA 4), there are also options within NOVA 3 whose consumption would be more successful.

In the case of mould bread, a category that represents 10% of the scans, 6 of every ten products turns out to be ultraprocessed or NOVA 4 and the rest are NOVA 3, that is, products usually processed with products from group 2 (salt, sugar, etc.) that usually contain 2 to 5 ingredients. Cereals, in their versions of oats, granola, muesli or infantile format, account for 11% of the most scanned products, and half of them are ultraprocessed (NOVA 4). It is interesting to note that in this category NOVA 4 there are some of the varieties that include claims of the type ‘integral’ or ‘no added sugar’, which also often coincide with a poor nutritional quality. It happens in a similar way in the case of soluble cocoa, precisely those varieties with more claims, of the type ‘0% sugar’, those that obtain a higher index by virtue of their processing, that is, NOVA 4. The number of users of El CoCo has grown exponentially, just as it has been used. Currently it already has more than 300,000 downloads and several million scanned products.

“In recent times, consumers have been strengthened, seeking a healthy diet and denial of ultra-processed foods or a dubious composition. The technology has come to the rescue to supply the lack of transparency of labelling many products, and we like to think that we have had something to do with it. The Consumer is now more aware, because we have put in his hand a tool that allows him to know, indeed, what he is buying,” concludes Boubault.

Help citizens to consume way more conscious
The CoCo is a free app available Android e I which allows consumers to know the degree of processing and nutritional value based on Nutriscore of food in a simple and understandable way by scanning the bar code in the container.

The app has recently been updated to incorporate new parameters and a clearer image. The company is working on subsequent updates to incorporate new product lines and new analysis indices.

The CoCo is a 100% independent project which began with a database of 15,000 food products (among which are the most consumed by the Spaniards), and which has continued to incorporate more and more to reach, currently, the 160,000 products available.
