More than 4.5 million people in Spain suffer from migraine. The International Society of DAO Deficit highlights the effectiveness of this enzyme as a preventive dietary treatment for migraine

More than 80% of patients with migraine suffer from DAO deficiency, whose treatment based on enzyme supplements DiAmino Oxidasa (DAO) manages to reduce the pain of this neurological pathology. This is one of the main conclusions of the review of studies carried out by the International Society for the Deficit of DAO (SIDDAO) on the occasion of the International Day of Action against Migraine.

According to a study conducted at the Cephae Unit of the General Hospital of Catalonia in 2017, 87% of patients suffering from DAO deficiency also suffer from migraines, as published in the journal Journal of Physiology and Biochemistry[i][i] . These neurological problems are one of the most prevalent symptoms of this metabolic deficit, a disorder that occurs by an alteration of food histamine when there is little activity of the DAO enzyme in metabolism, as concludes a more recent study of the journal Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism [ii][ii].

More than 4.5 million people suffer from migraine in Spain, according to the latest data Atlas of Migraine in Spain[iii][iii] of which a million suffers chronically, that is, about 15 days a month. A health problem that causes a loss of the quality of life of patients, as the intensity of pain has a great impact on family, social and labor activities.

In the words of Adriana Duelo, a nutritionist and a member of the SIDDAO scientific committee, “the likelihood of migraine is greatly increased when an excess of histamine occurs in blood plasma, either by genetic, pharmacological or pathological factors.” Histamine is an endogenous molecule that fulfills a fundamental function in the body in a multitude of physiological processes and is also present in dozens of foods that are usually ingested. In those patients who suffer from an OCD deficiency, this molecule is not correctly metabolized, which causes a blood buildup that can cause various symptoms. Therefore, since SIDDAO, the effectiveness of preventive dietary treatments with DiAmino Oxidase enzyme and low diet in histamine is recalled as a therapeutic option to address this pathology.

“Migraine and headaches are the most characteristic symptoms of the DAO deficit, but this alteration of metabolism can also cause gastrointestinal disorders, such as abdominal swelling or irritable bowel syndrome, as well as dermatological disorders, such as urticaria, atopic dermatitis, or psoriasis, and many others,” the expert of scientific society explains.

Detection of the relationship between migraine and DAO deficit
Due to the high prevalence of the OCD deficiency in people suffering from migraine, since SIDDAO, it is recalled that these patients have the possibility to identify if they also suffer from this metabolic disorder through a simple genetic test based on oral mucosa or by a simple analysis.

“In the event that migraine is accompanied by other symptoms such as swelling, intestinal irregularities, muscle pain or dermatological problems, it is recommended that patients ask an physician to perform these tests to identify if they suffer from DAO deficiency,” says the nutritionist.

In these cases, SIDDAO recalls that, today, thanks to research and scientific and clinical advances in recent years, patients with migraine and DAO deficiency simultaneously have the possibility of aborting these health problems through a simple preventive dietary treatment, without side effects, based on reducing the levels of histamine of the diet and increasing the levels of the DiAmino Oxidase enzyme (DIAmino Oxydase). In fact, in the words of Adriana Duelo, “this new therapeutic approach opens a new stage both in the diagnosis and in the preventive treatment of migraine.”

The International Society of DAO Deficit

The International Society of DAO Deficit promotes the joint advancement of science for the benefit of patients with this metabolic disorder. The Society has among its objectives the exchange of ideas to deepen the knowledge of the DAO Deficit, both of its biological bases and of clinical aspects, diagnostics, therapeutics, and of prevention; the promotion of scientific advances and their impact on the health system.
