Yes, it is perfectly right, positive self-talk can make you think well. You can enjoy better emotional health only when you recognize those flaws in your thinking process and introduce positive self-talk to overcome them.

Most of us have some distortions in our thinking process and tend to think always in the negative. This is how we get into severe emotional stress. The methods you would use to recognize and avoid these distortions in thinking depends may vary from time to time.

Some of us have very extreme views on certain things. We view certain circumstances as purely black or purely white. It is better to recognize that there could be certain grays too, meaning having too unrealistic expectations may only put you under more emotional stress. For example if you have made a mistake in your job, it is better to think “I am human and made a mistake and I can always do better next time” than think, “I am a utter failure in life.” This positive self-talk will help you think well.

 

Next never imagine the worst in every situation, for if you  do it you will be under great emotional stress and may get it too. For example, if you are nervous when you are going to give a talk, it is better to think that speakers may be nervous than assume that you are going to create a mess and be a disgrace in front of the audience. It is just positive self-talk that can make you think and perform better.

It is wrong to assume that we can easily read the thoughts  in another person’s mind.  It is emotionally stressful to assume that others only think bad or ill of you. Like if you have attended an interview and have not been called for a second round for a week, it is wrong to assume you have been rejected. It could also be that your employer is just taking time to decide. Positive self-talk may not always give you the desired result but thinking positive helps you to think better of alternatives. It is best that you find something positive in every situation and avoid thinking of the negatives only. Like if  you are visiting your strict in-laws, it is better to also appreciate the weather and natural surroundings if they live a cool scenic place. In addition learn to mentally filter all aspects of a situation and look at the broader aspect of things. Like if you did not achieve your target of getting  100 customers in a month you are not a failure. Maybe if you look at the bigger picture you will find you have other customers who have great trust and faith in you.

 

Similarly never try to take responsibility for others behavior. You are not responsible for others bad behavior. If ones boss behaves in a bad way with you, it does not always mean you are wrong. It could also be that your boss has a stress problem. In addition it is better to break away from generalizations like you are a failure at parties. Instead some positive self-talk that I am the best with people who have common interests like me would help you to feel and think well.

To conclude, positive self-talk with the right perspective of thinking of situations as a whole would help you to think and feel well and better of yourself.
