Food provides the nourishment and energy that a toddler needs in order to be hale and hearty. There is no ideal point of time to introduce complementary foods in the diet of the infants. These foods should be introduced at the appropriate developmental phase of the infant so that they get the nutritional requirements required at that time.

Proteins: Protein helps in anabolism of tissue and in preservation of fluid balance. Proteins are the source of energy and helps in the formation of immunoglobins. It also forms an important part of enzymes and hormones. Intake of breast milk, egg, yoghurt, infant formula, fish, meat cheese, etc. can prevent the infant from fatty liver, retardation of growth, reddish pigmentation of hair and skin, which are some deficiency symptoms. Carbohydrate: It is the main source of energy of a child which is necessary for usual fat metabolism. Glucose is the only energy source for brain. Intake of sufficient breast milk, infant formula, whole-grain bread, cereals, potatoes, fruits and vegetables prevent the deficiency of carbohydrates in the child which might lead to ketosis.

 

Fat: Fat is the strong energy origin which is the padding for temperature maintenance within the body. It supplies essential fatty acids needed for child growth and carries fat soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. Breast milk, infant formula, protein rich foods like (meat, dairy products, nuts), butter, margarine, etc. are a source of fat that helps in preventing eczema, lower growth rates in newborn, low resistance to infection, hair loss, which are deficiency symptoms of fat.

Besides these aspects, Vitamin A, D, E, K, calcium, iron, sodium, iodine, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, copper, zinc, chloride are all essential for the growth and development of infant body.
