The application develops its own algorithm that incorporates, together with the World Health Organization (WHO) nutrient profile model, the NOVA food processing system and the warning system that alerts the excessive presence of sugar, saturated fats, sodium or calories. This is the only application of food analysis of the market that combines different internationally validated scientific criteria by health and nutrition experts

The application of food product analysis The Coco, has created, developed and incorporated into its system the only algorithm of the sector, based on exclusively scientific criteria and endorsed by the international community, to analyze the nutritional quality of packaged foods. Its objective is that the score provided is easier to interpret for the user and at the same time more rigorous.

The new algorithm uses its own and innovative score methodology based on various existing scientific works and scales, contrasted and recognized by the professional community for its usefulness and rigor: the WHO nutrient profile for different categories of food, the NOVA system based on the level of food processing and the Chilean government's warning system. The combination of these three metrics, verified by the El CoCo nutritionist team, which leads Juan Reven, will offer the user a score of 0 to 10, where 0 is a little or nothing acceptable in a healthy diet, and from 8 would be recommended.

“During the year El CoCo is running we have heard the demands and doubts of our user community. We know that they value rigour and trust, so we have tried to propose the best algorithm possible to offer clearer, real and scientific information” - says Jean-Baptiste Boubault, co-founder of El CoCo-. “With the combination of these three systems, and advised by our team of expert nutritionists, with Juan Reven to the head, we calculate a note that is rigorous, objective and that comes exclusively from scientific criteria endorsed by the international community.”

The goal of El CoCo with this algorithm change is to offer full transparency to the user. It is the only application of this type that opens to the public its criteria to 100% and makes clear, without a doubt, where the rating comes from. In this way, it aims to help and promote the nutritional education of consumers in an objective way and outside the influence of brands. “It is very important for us to promote transparency in the food sector and it is essential for us to apply to ourselves the same requirement,” says Boubault.

PUNTUATION The CoCo
For the note of each scanned product, the WHO classification systems are combined (the European nutrient profile model), which indicates which products or foods, depending on their nature or characteristics, should or should not be promoted for children; the system NOVAwhich indicates the degree of processing of the products; and Chilean Government warning systemwhich establishes alerts for products with high levels of sugar, saturated fats, sodium or calories. Each time a bar code is scanned, the algorithm identifies, first, whether or not the product meets the WHO criteria. Then it is classified according to its NOVA index (1 for non-processed or minimally processed, 2 for the culinary ingredients, 3 for the processed and 4 for the ultraprocessed). Finally, and taking into account the warnings of the Chilean system, you can subtract more or less points to your final score.

The score obtained, therefore, will not only be a product ranking, but also a recommendation regarding its consumption frequency:

Products with 0 to 4 points: are little or nothing recommended options in a healthy eating pattern. The CoCo does not recommend its consumption, with the general slogan of “the less better.”

The products with 5 to 7 points: are acceptable options but there are better purchase options. The CoCo recommends looking for healthier options in the same category whenever possible, without obsessing.

Products with 8 to 10 points: are recommended products. The CoCo recommends giving priority to these options.

“Many consumers have a real difficulty in interpreting food labeling. The reason is that they often show messages that may seem positive and healthy in products that are actually ultraprocessed and have a lousy nutritional profile. The technology and analysis applications have arrived in the last year to supposedly help us in this field, and yet many of them remained confusing for the user. In El CoCo we have proposed to provide clarity and rigorousity, and with this new system we have achieved it: a single note between 1 and 10 for each product, and a more reliable analysis by combining scientific criteria and general recommendations backed by supported agencies and qualified nutrition experts. We don't think we've given an infallible system, but it does with the least flawless of the systems. And we will continue to improve it,” says Juan Reven, nutritionist and adviser to El Co.
