The I Virtual Race “Back to the Metabolic World” is a fun-sport event that seeks to bring the reality of hereditary metabolic diseases closer to society in general through the organization of a virtual career. This type of disease requires a very low special diet in proteins that poses numerous problems for affected and family members. This virtual race will coincide with World Food Day in order to make this problem known to society
The Spanish Federation of Hereditary Metabolic DiseasesFEEMH), together with several of the associations that make up it, will organize the first virtual race for hereditary metabolic diseases. The race will begin next day 16 Octobermatching the World Food Day and will continue until the next Saturday, October 23rd.
Precisely, this type of disease is characterized, among other things, by the need for some Very special diets which require the incorporation of dietaryotherapy formulas in addition to special types of foods, usually low in proteins, which greatly limit the options of the group and seriously affect their lifestyle. In particular, due to the crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, families and affected with less resources have been severely impacted as this type of space food can become 600% more expensive than its normal equivalents. To mitigate this problem, the different entities that form part of FEEMH make available to the affected, low-protein food bankswith more affordable prices. In addition, different associations actively promote the improvement of the living conditions of the affected and their families through cooking workshops, meetings and, of course, actively collaborating and fostering basic research in this type of rare diseases. This sporting event aims to raise awareness among society of the reality of this type of disease through the promotion of a healthy activity. The event has national scope and aims to add, among all participants, a minimum of 5,000Km which symbolically represents a “return to metabolic Spain”. The event will be held through the Kinendu platform and has the support of various sponsors. During the week of the challenge, the metabolic community will become visible on social networks through the hashtag #CarreraMetabolica
The funds obtained will be used by each member association and the federation itself to promote the improvement of the living conditions of those affected by metabolopathies. From FEEMH we ask you to join this challenge and thus get closer to the knowledge of this type of disease.
