Can you eat your own salads all summer without having a garden? How to optimize an area for more performance with less work? For a cultivation on the ground, economical and adaptable (almost) everywhere, the vertical orchard is an alternative that is on the way to conquer both professionals and individuals

What is a vertical orchard?
A Vertical garden is a method of cultivation on the ground, which allows the cultivation of vegetables and plants in general, floor by floor. The principle is to be able to cultivate everywhere, without necessarily having space on the ground, as long as one benefits from a proper sun and a little water.

Unlike a horizontal garden, a vertical garden allows to produce both or more in a smaller area. The cultivation can be done on the ground or in an inert substrate (arena, clay balls). It is possible to have a vertical garden for a few euros for a simple system, like a few hundred euros for larger and automated systems.

Vertical orchard is often done outside, but it can very well be installed inside an apartment, as long as you have a bright window. The small size and ease of cultivation make it a real trend for the years to come. Produce at home, anywhere, without having any space, only with the desire to eat vegetables and herbs “from the garden”.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of the garden in vertical format?

Advantages

- Space saving: for a row of 10 salads, you can produce X times more in vertical position. X depending on the height of the crop.

- Water management: as water is distributed floor by floor, benefits each plant. No water loss on uncultivated surfaces. In addition, water overflow can be reused if recovered at the bottom of the support.

- Nutrient carriers: it is easier to enrich a small amount of fully used soil than to enrich a large surface where only half is occupied by crops. Whether from an economic point of view or simply from a temporary point of view (arising an orchard and enriching it takes longer than filling a bathtub with land).

- Control of the “molestias”: there are no weeds (or very few), so there is no time to pass the weeds. The snails and other slugs will stop in the first salad and the rest of the production will be saved. Rabbit havoc will be less consequent because they have no more than 50 cm high.

– Calor: a classic garden suffers the heat of the sun and drought. In a tube or vertical support, the sun does not dry the ground in the same way as outdoors. The soil is more humid for longer, only a small area is subject to evaporation.

Disadvantages

- The type of plants that can be cultivated: depending on the material you have, it is not possible to cultivate everything. Therefore, potatoes and other deep-seed vegetables will be banned in most cases. If you want to put lettuce, plastic bottles will be enough to make a vertical orchard. If you want to put tomatoes, you will need containers with more space and also for the development of each tomato.

- Cost: In most cases it is possible to create a vertical garden at a lower cost. But as soon as you want to automate irrigation or hydropony, investment can take off quickly. It is important to think about the performance of such investment in terms of production and make your own calculations.

What can be cultivated there?
In a garden vertical garden formatYou can't cultivate everything. Some vegetables lend themselves more easily to grow on the earth, while others need more land for their roots. Anything that does not require depth for the roots and does not “pese” too much in the structure, such as pumpkins, can be cultivated.

A non-exhaustive list of vegetables and herbs to grow: lettuce, parsley, onions, basil, pumpkin, cherry tomato and berries, among many.

Depending on the chosen containers, other vegetables can be produced. If you want to put spicy peppers, this would be possible as long as the “pin” stage is large enough for the plant to develop properly.

How to create a first vertical garden?
Establishing a vertical garden is relatively simple and cheap. For a small vertical garden with vegetables that need little land, it is possible to do so with recycled plastic bottles, (see article Make an outside vertical garden with plastic bottles) or use a plant tube.

There are also prepared supports: from a felt bag of several pockets to hang on a wall or a fence, to a tower with a water reserve. Support is chosen according to your environment. If there is little space on the floor, it will be preferable to choose a support that can be attached to the wall, a channel or a rail, for example.

The work of reform and decoration: Once you have found the support, you must purchase seed or seed according to your needs. The combination of good soil, a seed, a little water, heat and patience are the basis of a promising harvest.
