Urinary incontinence—loss of bladder control—is a common problem and often causes shame. The intensity ranges from losing urine occasionally when coughing or sneezing, to having a need to urinate so sudden and strong that you do not get to the bathroom in time. To advise citizens and report on the symptoms, risk factors and existing treatments, the Gipuzkoa School of Pharmaceuticals (COFG) has edited a new video rabbit: https://youtu.be/gopnzP7lNTs

While urinary incontinence is most often given as people age, is not an inevitable consequence of aging. “If urinary incontinence affects your daily activities, you should consult the doctor. In most people, some simple lifestyle changes or medical treatment can ease the discomfort or stop urinary incontinence,” says Arantxa García Peinado, pharmacist and vice president of COFG.

As reported, urinary incontinence is not a disease, but a symptom. It may be caused by certain daily habits, background diseases or physical problems, in addition, it may be temporary or persistent

Between factors that increase the risk of urinary incontinence sex (women are more likely to suffer incontinence of effort), age (as you age the muscles of the bladder and urethra lose strength), overweight (since excess weight increases pressure on the bladder), perform impact exercise such as running, or smoking.

Regarding treatment of urinary incontinence since COFG recall that depends on the type of incontinence, severity and cause background. “A combination of treatments is probably needed.” Among them are: behavioral techniques, exercises to strengthen the pelvic soil muscles, some medications and – in those cases where the treatment has not resulted – various surgical procedures.

Prevention
Urinary incontinence cannot always be prevented. However, to reduce the risk, the vice president of COFG recalls, it may be useful:

- Keep a healthy weight.

- Practice pelvic floor exercises.

- Avoid foods that irritate the bladder, such as caffeine, alcohol and acid foods

- Ingesting more fiber, which can prevent constipation, a cause of urinary incontinence.

- Don't smoke or get help quitting.

Arantxa García Peinado insists that people often feel embarrassed about the problem of bladder control and try to face it on their own, using absorbent compresses and even avoiding getting out of the house. “They should know that there are effective treatments for urinary incontinence and that it is important to consult with the doctor or pharmacist to recover an active and more confident life,” he concludes.
