The Spaniards are increasingly aware of the importance of food for health and in particular the consumption of sugar. This follows from the analysis carried out by Natruly, the brand that wants to change the world by changing what is eaten , which reflects that 87.3% of consumers look at the nutritional labels of the products and 74.5% checks the amount of sugars it contains. It is the most relevant information given, above saturated fats (63%), calories (60%) or artificial additives (60%). However, only 41% pay attention to the amount of sweeteners.

“Today, the message that sugar is harmful to health is very widespread, however, there is enormous confusion about sweeteners, their origin and their harmful effects to the body. There are many false beliefs and, unfortunately, there are still few honest brands that really worry about explaining to their consumers what and how their products are made,” he says. Consumers are mostly aware (91%) that when a product is labeled as ‘0% sugars’ it sometimes contains sweeteners. What is not so well informed about, however, is what differences exist between one and another. 60% still think that the only difference there is is that the first fatty and the second not and 57% believe that sweeteners do not sweeten as much as sugar.

On the adverse effects they can produce, there is no doubt that there has been a greater awareness of the harmful effects of sugar consumption. Sixty per cent of respondents were totally or quite agreeing that “sugar consumption causes damage to the organism in the long term”, while only 35 per cent share this claim with respect to sweeteners. There are still many doubts about the latter and it is a lack of knowledge that can be harmful to consumers. Alimentos Ricos en Yodo o Iodo

Of the 19 artificial sweeteners approved in the EU that are commonly consumed in processed products, most Spaniards only recognize the sacral (90%) and, to a lesser extent, the steviol (59%) and aspartame (51%). At this point, it is particularly noteworthy that only 24% of respondents have heard of maltitol, despite being present in a large number of processed products of high consumption.

‘The lack of awareness still exists about sweeteners is a matter of concern. One in two consumers still thinks that the only difference with sugar is that they serve to lose weight or that they don’t have that much capacity to sweeten, but they know very little about the harmful that can be for health,” Gustafson says.

Healthy and sweet alternatives
Fortunately, brands are increasingly working to offer healthy alternatives that do not contain sugars or sweeteners of any kind.
