Coinciding with the upcoming World Oceans Day celebration on Wednesday, June 8, 2022, Herbalife Nutrition announced a two-year global agreement with Plastic Bank, an entity dedicated to the recycling of plastic that combines cutting-edge technology and the transformation into a circular economy

Plastic Bank combines blockchain and recycling to try to solve the problem of plastic pollution in the seas and reduce poverty. To this end, the entity has a whole collection network to give a second life to plastic and economic incentives for those who contribute to closing the circle.

Through this agreement, Herbalife Nutrition will help prevent more than 181,4369 kg of plastic from reaching the oceans by the end of 2023. In addition, the organization offers an economic opportunity for members of the Plastic Bank community in Indonesia, who exchange plastic waste at local collection points in order to obtain recurrent income. Its work contributes and strengthens Herbalife Nutrition's commitment to recycling and sustainability, reflected in its social responsibility memory and its goal of reaching 50 million positive impacts in line with the sustainable development goals and the company's 50th anniversary in 2030.

“The health of the planet impacts on the health of people who live in it,” says Erin Richards, director of the Herbalife Nutrition social responsibility area. “Our agreement with Plastic Bank will help improve the world’s oceans while creating an economic opportunity for people to join this effort.”

At present, plastic covers 40% of the world's ocean surface, resulting in more than 12 billion euros in economic damage to marine ecosystems, according to the United Nations Environment Programme.

“We want to congratulate Herbalife Nutrition for choosing to be on the right side of history and help save the ocean from plastic. Our program is creating opportunities for the socio-economic advancement of thousands of communities around the world,” says David Katz, founder and CEO of Plastic Bank. “By offering safe and traceable sources of income to members of our plastic collector community, together we can empower them to stop ocean plastic and transcend poverty.”

This agreement is added to other active Herbalife Nutrition recycling programs. In more than a dozen countries around the world, the company has implemented local recycling initiatives in its offices and sales and distribution centers in order to encourage the recycling of product packaging and raise customer awareness of recycling and waste reduction. Some countries have also closed agreements with local agencies such as Green Antz in the Philippines, transforming bottles and bottles of products used in ecological construction materials. Herbalife Nutrition Brazil participates in the “Give a Hand to the Future” program organized by the Brazilian Association of Perfumeria and Cosmetic Industries in Personal Hygiene (ABIHPEC), to invest in infrastructure for recycling and training cooperatives for its employees.

In his Global Responsibility Report: Nourishing People and the Planetlaunched last year, Herbalife Nutrition details its goals of reducing the use of plastic and more recycled materials such as PCR (post-consumption resin), while decreasing the total number of containers from its global nutrition products.
