Cardiovascular diseases are the first cause of death in the world. A large part of these deaths could be avoided by reducing associated risk factors. Herbalife Nutrition joins World Heart Day to call for reflection on the urgent need to adopt a healthy life and thus prevent cardiovascular diseases

The World Federation of Hearts, with the support of WHO and UNESCO, celebrates World Heart Day every 29 September with the objective of raising awareness of cardiovascular diseases, prevention, control and treatment. Herbalife Nutrition, a leading multinational for direct sale of nutritional supplements, joins this initiative by betting for a healthy lifestyle to keep the heart in perfect condition.

According to the latest statistics, cardiovascular diseases are the first cause of death in the world. A large proportion of these deaths could be avoided by reducing risk factors related to the current lifestyle such as smoking, harmful alcohol consumption, physical inactivity and unhealthy diet.

Although sometimes the heart does not warn until it is too late, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, overweight and obesity are signs of alarm before which you need to be alert and pay special attention.

In fact, recent studies show that a 10% reduction in the blood cholesterol level can reduce the risk of heart disease by 50%. Unfortunately, statistics show that more than half of European adults have high blood cholesterol levels, with Europe being the region with the highest rate.

“Although there are risk factors that cannot be changed, such as age and family history, there are many things that can be done on a daily basis to care for the heart. Small and achievable healthy goals should be set, and step by step get a healthier version,” recommends Florence Braga, Managing Scientific Affairs of Herbalife Nutrition EMEA.

Taking a healthy lifestyle is vital to maintain a healthy heart. Therefore, Herbalife Nutrition, from its commitment to a healthy life, recommends a number of tips that can help prevent many cardiovascular diseases and lead a better quality of life.

Limit the consumption of saturated fats and trans fats and focus on healthy fats: Saturated fats have a greater impact on “bad cholesterol LDL”, increasing their presence in the organism and decreasing “HDL cholesterol”, also called “good cholesterol”. Intake of fats should come mainly from mono and polyunsaturated fat sources, also known as Omega-9 (olive oil, almonds and avocados), Omega-6 (oil and sunflower seeds, corn and soy oil, pine nuts and nuts) and Omega 3 (little oil, nuts, chía and linen seeds). In addition, Omega 3 fats from fish are an extraordinary ally to contribute to the maintenance of blood pressure and the normal concentration of triglycerides in the blood. They are present in fatty fish such as salmon, herring and sardine and contribute to the normal functioning of the heart.

A lot of fiber, especially beta-glucans
As part of a healthy diet it is very important to eat at least 25 g daily fiber, present in fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains. From Herbalife Nutrition they recommend integration into beta-glucan eating habits, a type of fiber found in oats and barley, for its proven effectiveness in maintaining and even reducing cholesterol levels.

Sal, in moderation
Excessive sodium presence in diets is directly related to increased risk of arterial hypertension. Two grams a day is enough to season food without the need to put cardiovascular health at risk. Unfortunately the average intake is twice the recommended. Therefore, it is necessary, as responsible consumers, to include in the food routine the observation of the labels of the products to know the amount of salt contained in each article, and thus limit those that have a high sodium content. As a general rule, items containing more than 0.6 g of sodium (or 1.5 g of salt) per 100 g of food ready for consumption can be considered high in sodium. A much healthier option is to season dishes with herbs and spices. Innovacion y creatividad

Protein, best soy
A recent clinical study that included more than 2,600 participants showed that the consumption of 25 g of daily soy protein was related to the reduction of LDL and total cholesterol.

Reduce alcohol intake
The amounts established by doctors and nutritionists should not be exceeded: 10 g for women and 20 g for men.

Maintain healthy body weight
Lower body weight also influences total LDL levels and total cholesterol, leading to a decrease in cardiovascular risk factors.

Exercise usually
Being physically active not only reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, but also improves bones and muscle tone. Only 150 minutes of moderate-intensive physical activity or 75 minutes of intense physical activity a week, is enough to keep a healthy heart.

Avoid tobacco
In addition to avoiding or reducing tobacco use as much as possible, it is also important to avoid secondary exposure to smoking of others.
