According to the One Poll study conducted for Herbalife Nutrition between 28,000 people from 30 countries between the end of September and the beginning of October, most respondents have included more fruits and vegetables in their diet to care for or lose weight. The meat continues to have the prominence: it is part of the daily diet in 80% of Spanish households

43% of Spaniards have made significant changes in their diet during 2020. Half of these changes have been related to increased consumption of fruits and vegetables or foods with a vegetarian base. These are the main findings of the study carried out between the end of September and the beginning of October by One Poll for Herbalife Nutrition, which analyzed food profiles of 28 thousand citizens from more than 30 countries.

77% of Spaniards who have made changes in their diet have indicated that it has been for health reasons and 53% to lose weight, a trend that is also maintained in European and global figures.

When it comes to plant proteins, Spaniards show a marked interest in grain foods and legumes. Consumer preferences include lentils (27%), followed by nuts and seeds (20%) and chickpeas (18%). In Europe they like nuts and seeds (25%), while in the rest of the world also predominates soy or products created from soy (20%), considered by nutritionists as the only complete vegetable protein, capable of supplying animal proteins.

The Spaniards feel healthier
Changes in the diet have had a positive effect on health. Thus 84% of the Spaniards who have changed their food this year admit it. Actually, 6 out of 10 intend to keep these changes in 2021.

Asked by physical exercise, more than 60% of the Spanish respondents indicated that this year more have been exercised and 58% consider that they are healthier people a year ago.

The meat continues to reign in the Spanish menus
While there is a trend towards increased plant consumption, 80% of Spaniards claim to eat meat in their daily diet. fotosdeflores.es

The consumption of meat in Spain is in fact higher than the average of all the countries analyzed (72%) and also that of the countries of the region that participated in the study: United Kingdom, Romania, Germany, France, Ireland, Israel and Bulgaria (77%). Curiously, and contrary to trends in Europe and the world, in Spain are women who most include meat in their diet (81% vs 77% of men).

Family traditions and eating habits have a special relevance in meat consumption patterns. Most of the respondents in Spain consume meat for their taste (57%) or because their family consumes meat (34%). However, there is a high percentage (26%) that claims to consume meat because it believes that, otherwise, it could be stopped obtaining important nutrients.

Asked for the moment “holy” to the Spaniards first tempts the chicken (64%) and the beef of cattle (25%)unlike the global and European figures that prefer chicken and fish, seafood and other seafood.
