Why Use a Natural, Dry Carpet Cleaner?

A natural dry carpet cleaner is easy to make at home, whether you’re in a pinch or avoiding the harsh chemicals in store-bought cleaners. Our carpet cleaning powder is:

  • A homemade pet odor remover for carpets or rugs

  • The best carpet cleaner for pet urine odor and vomit

  • A non-toxic and all natural carpet cleaner

  • Eco-friendly and low to zero-waste

  • A great way to clean carpets without a carpet cleaner (machine or wet solution)

The DIY dry carpet cleaner is also excellent for regular carpet and area rug cleaning. Use this carpet powder as a DIY car carpet cleaner, a DIY carpet cleaner for pets, or for cleaning tough and stinky messes like bodily fluids, grease spills, and pet stains.

Bad smells don’t stand a chance thanks to the baking soda and essential oil combination. The non-toxic cleaner is not only aromatic, but it’s also entirely safe for daily use around pets and kids.

Dry carpet cleaning is low-maintenance enough for daily use too. The process combines with your typical vacuum routine. But the added cleaning power breaks down dirt and protects fibers against future stains. Spot treatment or large cleaning uses are both fast and easy because you don’t need a machine steam cleaner either. No need to wait for carpets to dry before you can traverse through a room.

Plus, homemade carpet powder is much cheaper than its store-bought counterparts. Carpet powder is insanely easy to make and companies rack up the price. You’re basically paying for the packaging. Making your cleaning products, especially carper cleaner, allows you to waste less (or no) plastic.

Steps to Make Our Homemade Carpet Cleaner Recipe

Our baking soda carpet cleaner recipe only requires two ingredients. You can whip it up in a bowl for immediate use, store the leftovers in a jar, or re-use an old Parmesan cheese container to shake the powder onto the floor when needed.

Ingredients:

  • Baking soda

  • Essential oil (see below)

Directions:

Mix as much baking soda as you need to cover your carpet or rugs with around 10-20 drops of essential oil. Any oil you enjoy is fine (see more info below). Lavender and Purify are my two favorites.

What Essential Oils to Use for DIY Carpet Cleaner

Rocky Mountain Oils is my go-to company for essential oils. I use their lavender oil for pet-related messes and mix up carpet powder with their Purify oil once in a while to deep clean and deodorize carpets.

The essential oils you use mostly contribute to the scent of the carpet cleaner. However, some oils may offer benefits to boost cleaning power. Personalize the cleaner to suit your preferences.

The best essential oils to use for DIY carpet cleaner include:

  • Lavender: A favorite scent among all ages, lavender oil is safe to use in the house among kids and pets. Aromatherapy benefits from this oil extend to anxiety relief, relaxation, and better sleep.

  • Orange: Orange essential oil prevents fungi and bacteria growth. It’s safe for use around children over two-years-old, but not pets.

  • Lemon: Super fresh citrus scents like lemon bring a classic clean scent to your home. Lemon oil also removes odor from a room and is antibacterial. It’s safe for humans of all ages, but not for all types of pets.

  • Bergamot: Another type of citrus oil, bergamot’s sweet scent soothes your mood. Safe for kids over 6-months and pets, it’s perfect for home use.

  • Purify: An RMO exclusive oil, purify is an essential oil blend for cleaning. The oil tackles harsh chemicals and unpleasant odors while cleansing your home.

I have dogs, so RMO’s Purify is my #1 essential oil of choice for freshening up carpets and rugs around the home. The scent smells clean, perfectly combating pet odor.

Optional: No oils on hand? Instead of essential oils, try mixing in a teaspoon of ground cloves or cinnamon for a divine smell. You can also use the baking soda alone if you’re sensitive to smells.

Sprinkle the cleaning powder on the surface of your carpet or rugs. Use as much carpet powder as you need to cover the entire surface. Allow the powder to sit for at least 15 minutes.

Next, grab your vacuum. Make sure your vacuum is safe for powder. (Some motors or older models do not handle this process well). Vacuum the carpets as usual. Some people like to use a shop vac rather than their everyday vacuum.

That’s it! Let me know how you like this powder DIY carpet cleaning solution in the comments below.
