How to Cook Tofu

With vegetarianism on the rise, people are increasingly looking at supplements that they can add to their diet. Tofu made by curdling soy milk is an excellent source of proteins while being low in calories, sodium and cholesterol.

Moreover tofu contains essential minerals like phosphorous, magnesium, iron and copper that make it an excellent meat substitute for vegetarians.

To cook tofu you need to first understand that this soy protein source has three variants, silken, soft and firm tofu. Mushy and extremely soft, silken tofu is usually crushed and used in soups or salads. Soft tofu is a little bit firmer than silken tofu and is often used for sandwich fillings or as a scrambled egg substitute.

In contrast to these tofu variants, firm tofu can be used for stir frying, barbecuing and deep frying. Tofu can also be baked, steamed, broiled or simply seasoned with herbs and spices and cooked. Here are some ways of cooking delicious tofu.

  • Before cooking tofu the water from it needs to be drained. Pat dry the tofu with paper towels and then slice it into cubes or triangles. Place it on paper towels and put more paper towels atop it. Press the tofu with something heavy to drain out the excess water.
  • For stir frying tofu, you need to add some canola oil to a wide skillet and then put in the tofu. Stir fry the tofu over medium heat till the pieces of tofu turn golden brown. Now add in garlic, vegetables and scallions and cook it for some three to four minutes till the vegetables are well done.
  • You can also stir fry the tofu pieces after marinating it spices such as paprika, ginger, cumin and some ground pepper. Soy sauce, sherry minced shallots, lime juice and some chili paste can be combined to make a marinade for tofu. Once the tofu has been marinated, stir fry the tofu and serve with noodles or rice.
  • You can also bake the tofu by first draining out the moisture and then placing it on a baking tray on which a cookie sheet sprayed with non stick oil has been placed. Cook at 400 degrees till the tofu pieces turn a golden brown.
  • Tofu can be steamed and served with spicy sauce. Steam tofu pieces in a steamer for ten minutes after draining out the moisture from it. Combine green chillies, onions, soy sauce and sesame sauce and serve with the steamed tofu.
