How To Floss

Dental hygiene is tied in with our overall health. Scientists have published findings that link heart attacks to dental plaque. Plaque is a deposit that is formed on the teeth and can lead in the long run to several oral health problems like tooth decay (caries) and gum disease.

It is also responsible for bad breath.Plaque can be removed since it remains soft for the first two days after formation. Post this period, it gradually hardens and becomes tartar, which shows yellowish between the teeth and is very difficult to remove through normal cleaning methods.

At times like this, people who have long term plaque build-up need to visit a dentist to get a scaling done to remove it. Instead of subjecting yourself to this procedure, it is much better to include flossing in your daily dental care routine. Flossing should be done twice a day, particularly before bed time.

  • To begin flossing, you need to buy one unit of dental floss. Dental floss is normally made out of nylon or plastic. You can use the waxed or unwaxed variety, an electric flosser or spongy floss, depending on the space between your teeth and whether you use braces or not.
  • Take atleast 14 inches of dental floss and hold each end firmly with your thumb and forefinger. It should feel taut but not taut enough to cut through your gums.
  • Slip the floss between your teeth and pull out one end, while gently releasing the other. This will dislodge food particles from between the teeth. You might find it hard to floss the molars but work it in between and slide across the outside of the molars.
  • Press the floss against the teeth and slide out sideways.Repeat the procedure till you have cleaned the upper and lower rows.Gargle with mouthwash and water.
  • Tips And Warnings

  • Flossing should be done gently especially if your gums are prone to bleeding. During the first few times, bleeding of the gums is considered normal but be sure to gargle afterwards.
  • You can floss either before or after you brush your teeth.
