How To Frost a Cake

Frosting a cake helps in adding a layer of rich texture and flavor to the cake while also helping it retain its natural moisture. Frosting a cake is quite simple and it helps in adding decorative touches to your home baked cake.

The key to frosting your cake well is to ensure that the cake is free of crumbs and is perfectly cooled before you add the layer of icing on top. Here are the step by step instructions on how you can frost your cake at home.

Instructions

  • Allow the cake to completely cool before you start frosting it. Then brush off the crumbs from the cake. For frosting a cake you need two or more layers. You can either put the cake batter in two different baking dishes and cook or split the cake into two layers.
  • After measuring the height of the cake, use wooden tooth picks halfway up. Now place a fifteen inch thread along the side of the cake which is marked by toothpicks and then pull it through the cake to divide it into two parts.
  • Place the lower half of the cake on a plate and add a layer of waxing paper under the edges of the cake. The wax paper keeps your work area clean and can be removed after the frosting is done.
  • Spoon in around half a cup of frosting and spread it evenly on the cake using a narrow metal spatula. Once this is done place the second layer over the iced bottom layer. Now you can start covering the entire cake with frosting.
  • To achieve perfect consistency it is best to apply at least two layers of frosting all over the cake. Take a cup of frosting and add some milk in it to thin it out. Apply it on the cake ensuring that you cover the entire cake surface including the sides.
  • Allow this base coat to dry before finishing off with a layer of thick frosting on top. Rotate the cake as you apply the frosting to keep the consistency even across the cake. You can frost the top of the cake by spooning some frosting in the center and then spreading it evenly with the spatula towards the edges.
