Difficulty Level

Growing carrots in your own garden is really an easy task. Here we are going to learn about ways to grow carrots.

Instructions

  • Choose the area of garden which gets plenty of sunlight. Carrots can grow in light shade, but the results are not that effective. So, sunny area is preferred for growing carrots.
  • The pH level of soil should be between 5.8 and 6.8.
  • Dig the soil to depth of around twelve inches. All kinds of traces of waste and rocks should be removed. The growing tip of carrot can get injured even due to a tiny twig. The root of the carrot may get exploited as a result.
  • Organic matter should be added in abundant quantity to the soil. Heavy soils would be lightened in a great way as a result. Also, this would help in increasing moisture preservation of sandy soils. Less fibrous and sweeter carrots are grown in moist soil.
  • Carrot seeds should be sown around three weeks prior to the latest expected cold weather.
  • Germination can be speeded up by way of soaking the seeds into water six hours before planting them.
  • Early sowing of the seeds should be kept shallow, so as to arrest sunlight. The seeds should be sprinkled on the surface of soil and compressed in a gentle manner. Thereafter, cover the seeds with finely filtered compost. However, if you plant the seeds late, then you should make sure to plant them around half inch deep.
  • Make sure to cut the seedlings before there is formation of tangles at the top. The greens should be clipped off with the help of scissors or should be pulled out in a very gentle manner from ground, without disturbing other plants.
  • Young plants should be sprayed with compost-tea once, so as to ensure healthy growth of carrots. Plants should then be mulched with compost so as to retain moisture. Give more water to the plants in initial stage. However, you should give less water, when the plants are near to maturity.
