Instructions

  • Things you need: half cup of cocoa powder, half cup of white sugar, one cup of coconut oil or white butter and a teaspoon of vanilla essence. You also need a double boiler, one or two sauce pans, spatula and a parchment paper for laying out the final product. Ideally, coconut oil should be used to make chocolate chips. It provides the hard and crisp texture to the chips. Using butter may make your chips soft and tender.
  • Put the cocoa powder, sugar and butter in the double boiler and put it on the flame. If you do not have a double boiler you can use a sauce pan on top of a regular pan filled with boiling water. The idea is to provide indirect heat to melt the ingredients. Keep stirring till the butter melts completely. Add vanilla essence and stir again well. The final mixture would be smooth creamy and chocolate rich, much like a hot chocolate sauce.
  • Now pour the mixture in shallow dish lined with parchment paper. Spread the mixture on the sheet thinly and evenly with the help of a spatula or anything flat and smooth. Keep the pan inside the refrigerator to cool and set. It will take 1 or 2 hours for the chocolate to harden completely. Once hard, remove it carefully from the parchment sheet and break it carefully into chunks of the size you want. Store these chocolate chips in an airtight container and keep in the refrigerator for a longer use, so that they do not melt in the outside heat.
  • Sugar free chocolate chips: If you wish to go for a sugarless homemade chocolate chips, you can add some fructose, honey or any other artificial or natural sweetener instead of white sugar. The texture may differ a bit when the chips are ready but surely they will be healthier and low calorie!
  • Chocolate Chips Ideas: Your homemade chocolate chips are now ready to be consumed. They might not look even or well shaped like the readymade ones look, but are definitely healthier and economical. You can use them with a wide variety of desserts like chocolate chip cookies, chocolate ice creams, brownies, cakes or muffins and cup cakes!

  • Avoid putting the chocolate bars to solidify in the freezer. They will harden even in the refrigerator. Putting them in freezer would destroy the crunch of the chips.
  • Homemade chocolate chips are pure hence they melt easily when you put them in baking while doing your cookies or brownies. However, after cooling they taste just the same.
