MARGen: A multinational study, recently published in the scientific journal Journal of SARS-CoV-2 and Coronavirus Disease, explains the molecular mechanism of melatonin's action against Covid19. The virus was known to deteriorate the immune defense of affected persons, but the mechanism of action was not well known.

According to the study, conducted by scientists from 4 countries (USA, Argentina, Spain) and coordinated by the doctor Jan Tesarikand the doctor Raquel Mendoza Tesarik, directors of the Clínica MARGen of Granada, the virus, by a mechanism not yet completely clear, diverts the natural metabolism of sugars, reducing the generation of energy in the cells.

This action affects immune system cells, weakening their capacity to defend the virus and stems from the immune response to a few efficient actions, and even harmful to the uninfected cells, generating a vicious circle that can lead to a “cytosine storm”, with a risk of multiorganic failure and the death of the person.

The study notes that melatonin corrects this anomaly and restores the proper function of immune defense against infection. The relationship between the metabolism of sugars and the severity of the COVID infection also explains why diabetic people and those who are overweight are more prone to severe complications of the infection. Melatonin , in the daily dose of 5-6 mg (at night before bed), can be useful in both conditions.

In addition, according to a recent work by the team of the MARGen clinic in Granada, this action of melatonin is added to others, as a direct effect against the virus within infected cells. In this case, melatonin blocks receptors for the growth factors that the virus needs for its proliferation.

The absence of adverse side effects and an additional benefit that extends to the protection of women against adenomiosis and endometriosis and of persons of both sexes against different types of cancer are other arguments for the use of melatonin, according to the directors of the MARGen clinic of Granada, Dr. Jan Tesarik and Dr. Raquel Mendoza Tesarik.
