Lou Ignarro, Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1998 and member of the Herbalife Nutrition Consultant Council, recommends a healthy and active lifestyle to increase the levels of this beneficial gas for health. One of the objectives of the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development seeks to ensure a healthy life and promote universal well-being

According to the WHO's Bloomberg Healthiest Country 2020 index, Spain is the world's healthiest country. The World Health Organization report highlights dietary patterns and the Spanish lifestyle as determining factors for achieving the honorary post. In addition, according to this study, Spain has the highest percentage of walkers (40% of the population) and underlines the importance of the Mediterranean diet, composed of healthy fats, vegetables and legumes, and very low in processed foods and little red meat. But how has this position been achieved as a healthier country in the world?, and above all, what to do to keep it in time and thus meet the goal of “Health and Welfare” of the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development? Lou Ignarro, Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1998 and member of the Herbalife Nutrition Consultant Council, gives us the main keys to achieving this purpose that seeks to guarantee a healthy life and promote universal well-being.

Although cardiovascular diseases continue to be the main cause of mortality in Spain, and according to the Nutritional Study of the Spanish Population (ENPE) 53% of Spaniards have obesity or overweight, the good news is that, according to WHO, 80% of myocardial infarcts and premature strokes are preventable with healthy lifestyle habits, which include a varied diet and moderate elimination of tobacco.

Contrary to what is usually thought, cardiovascular diseases are not something that appears in advanced age. Obesity usually begins in the years before puberty and continues in the twenties. Therefore, measures must be taken from very early ages to reduce these statistics.

Nitric oxide, vital for good health
Also known as nitrogen oxide or nitrogen monoxide (NO), nitric oxide is a gas considered toxic that is naturally present in mammals, but also in the air. However, in the blood it acquires a completely different role, acting as a regulator of the activity of the immune system, brain, arteries, liver, pancreas, uterus and lungs, among other organs, as well as regulating blood pressure.

Nitric oxide occurs in the arteries, veins, heart and many other organs in order to protect the body against cardiovascular diseases, inflammation, and memory disorders among other pathologies. A deficiency in certain organs can cause type 2 diabetes, hypertension, stroke or heart failure.

Thanks to research carried out by laboratories worldwide, it is now known how the body produces nitric oxide and the causes that cause it to decrease to levels that can be dangerous for health. In addition, it is also known how to prevent, and even solve the decrease in those levels in the body.

The key to maintaining a good level of nitric oxide in the body is a healthy and active lifestyle. Someone with obesity who makes the wise decision to control their weight and eating routines and include regular exercise in their daily activities can gradually increase the levels of this important element.

How to increase nitric oxide levels naturally?
A healthy diet involves a healthy diet: fish, low-fat meats, soy protein, fresh fruit and fiber are the basis for a balanced diet.

Fish and their oils are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids that help the health of the heart, as well as strengthening joints, brains and eyesight. For its part, soy protein is one of the most healthy, due to the absence of saturated fats and the content of amino acids essential for the production of nitric oxide.

On the other hand, fresh fruits and vegetables contain very potent antioxidants that also improve nitric oxide levels. People who have a healthy and balanced diet, with many fruits and vegetables, have a lower risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

And as a curiosity, did you know that fruits and vegetables produce antioxidants as protection against oxygen-free radicals originated by the ultraviolet rays of the sun? Another weight argument to include these foods on a regular basis in our diet.

Physical exercise, faithful ally of healthy life
According to the World Health Organization, physical inactivity is the main cause of mortality, followed by cardiovascular disease, diabetes and smoking.

Various research has demonstrated the health benefits of physical activity, and among older men, regular exercise can reduce the risk of death by up to 40%.

By exercising moderately, the heart rate increases and the heart pumps more blood into the arteries. The associated strength of the blood circulating with the walls of the arteries, stimulates the production of nitric oxide in the endothelial cells, which form the inner layer of the arteries. Therefore, the more exercise, the more nitric oxide occurs.
