Every 7 June, the United Nations recalls the need for food security awareness. It is essential to ensure that the food acquired is optimal for human consumption and that, in this way, we manage to reduce food-borne diseases. June 7 is a key date on the Primaflor agenda, a company committed to food security and sustainability since its inception

Food is the key to proper health and well-being. The way in which such foods are cultivated, produced and manipulated is ineffective in their safety. Compliance with food regulations, the implementation of good agricultural practices, the control of the whole traceability of the production, distribution and arrival process at the consumer table are some of the ways in which this food security awareness is worked.

Security and sustainability are part of the DNA of Primaflor since its inception, as in the 1990s they were pioneers in the implementation of sustainable cultivation techniques. In order to cover the wide spectrum of products and markets where the company is present, the demands of the customers are heard and, together with a trend analysis, we design planting programs. Plants grow in a nursery and then be transferred to the camp. After harvesting, the product is immediately sent to the processing plant where, after a thorough quality control, the product is prepared for consumption. Finally, before being transported to its final destination, the product is subject to last quality control. Only thus can one service every week of the year, to fulfill in time with the delivery of product 24 to 48 hours from its harvest.

The investment in R & D+I is constant, exceeding the million euros, and is intended for continuous improvement. Pioneers in drip irrigation technique, Primaflor has achieved a reduction in water consumption by 80%. In addition to this system, it has others such as hydroponic cultivation and technological greenhouses, which have allowed water consumption to be reduced by up to 60%.

Primaflor has its own experimental farms, where it develops more than 350 varieties, ensuring traceability control from the seed to the consumer.

Thanks to the flow of nitrogen volume data and water distribution on digitalized farm plans, Primaflor technicians can identify water stress or detect phytopathogens, among others, in order to make variations in fertiliser and minimize or increase irrigation. This technique allows to optimize and plan production, as well as reduce inputs and increase the efficiency of the plots.

During the pandemic, Primaflor has been one of the companies attached to the campaign #EstePaísLoAlimentamosUnidos, initiative of the sector that seeks to value its work and effort, demonstrating the importance that food production, in this case, fruits and vegetables, has for society in complicated moments like the current one.

Primaflor is a partner of the Fundación de la Real Academia de Medicina de Andalucía Oriental (RAMAO) and, more specifically, of the Aula de Dieta Mediterránea y Vida Saludable. An initiative created with the aim of promoting research, accreditation and dissemination in the medical sciences related to nutrition and physical activity, for the promotion and prevention of health in the territorial area of Eastern Andalusia, Ceuta and Melilla.
