From its experience and following the Covid-19 crisis, Actiu has strengthened its strategy to help companies redesign healthy and safe spaces that facilitate the well-being of their workers

The productivity and profitability of companies will be linked to their commitment to the well-being and health of their employees according to Actiu, Spanish leader in design and manufacture of furniture for work and hospitality spaces.

A new model, driven for some years by the leading companies of the market, which the Covid-19 crisis is rapidly spreading to the whole of the companies. Today, creating a healthy working environment is a requirement that conditions the competitiveness of companies in any sector and size.

According to WHO, workplace initiatives can help reduce disease absenteeism by 27 per cent and health care costs for enterprises by 26 per cent. Other research has also shown that around 86 per cent of the productivity problems of the organizations are related to the working environment.

Actiu was the first Spanish and fifth company in the world to obtain the certificate Well v2 Platinum which credits its headquarters as a space built to guarantee the health and well-being of its occupants, evaluating aspects such as lighting, temperature and even the mood of the people. From its experience and following the Covid-19 crisis, Actiu has strengthened its strategy already initiated with Cool Working by Actiu, helping companies to design their workspaces based on their needs and realities by improving the well-being of the staff. Now, this process is carried out, even more if possible, from deep knowledge and respect for the security needs that are added to those of well-being.

Well, more important than ever.
Creating a healthy working environment is now a priority goal of many companies. Ensure optimal temperature and humidity control conditions, the choice of sustainable materials with low formaldehyde emission as well as adequate air quality through external ventilation are some of the measures WELL guarantees health in working environments.

In this sense, WELL philosophy puts its focus on 10 elements key to creating healthy spaces that favor people's well-being. At this time of pandemic, it becomes increasingly necessary to take care of each of these elements so that users have a healthy working environment.

ALRE. Air quality analysis, total smoke restriction and automated manual ventilation. To create spaces without viruses it is necessary to increase the ventilation flow and not recircular, favoring the ventilation of the outside air. In addition, air quality audits and sensor monitoring are recommended. It is complete with the separation of sensitive spaces with self-locking doors, purifying filters, UVA irradiation lamps that eliminate microorganisms in ventilation and external separation systems with double door or rotating.

WATER. Analysis of water quality, auditing and monitoring of contaminants, purification filter, availability of water sources less than 30 meters and alerts. In order to avoid the presence of viruses, automatic taps (no contact), loose washbasin measures and waterfall (avoid contamination by pathogens), paper towels in bathrooms, automatic soap dispensers and selection of anti-humid materials that prevent the growth of pathogens.

TEMPERATURA. Questionnaire of satisfaction twice a year, thermostats in operational and meeting areas, radiant heating. The aim is to achieve an optimal temperature range, between 30 and 60 percent and to have humidity control systems to prevent virus development.

MATERIALS. Waste recycling, ecological and neutral cleaning products, furniture built with low-emission formaldehydes materials, halogenated flame retardants, COV’s, COSV’s, (AnSI/BIFMA standard e3-2011). In order to avoid viruses and other pathogens, high-contact surface cleaning protocols should be established and paperwork and other non-contact elements available.

ACUSTIC CONFORT. Measuring noise levels and achieving a range of between 30 and 45 decibels. Reverberation control, RT60 and NRC correct. Divisories and panels.

NUTRITION. Fruit of free disposal for employees. Nutritional information of the foods offered. Replacement of unhealthy products. Healthy feeding messages. Dining room for more than 25% of employees.

ILUMINATION. More than 70% of jobs are located less than 7.5 metres from a window. Promotional messages on lighting quality. Measurement of natural and artificial lighting (more than 215/300 lux), EML and lamps. Automatic esters to control dazzlement. Exterior views.

MOVEMENT. Adjustable monitors. More than 25% of users should be able to work on their feet. Ergonomic chairs. Pass spaces and attractive receivers. Enough showers and wardrobes. Guided physical activity programs. Automatic taps (reduce contacts). Space specific to sports practice. Messages promoting movement, using stairs, before the elevator. Access on foot. Cycling stations and other facilities. Green and recreational spaces.

MIND. Library on welfare. Biophilic design. Training programmes. Outdoor spaces for relaxation. Green spaces around and views to green spaces. Promotion of productivity with hours focus.

COMMUNITY. Coordination and communication equipment WELL. Questionnaire of space satisfaction. Guided tour in facilities. Extra benefits for individual health (such as medical insurance). Vaccination programs. Promote and facilitate teleworking if there is flu or virus symptoms.

Health, well-being and sustainability. Actiu an example of it
Recently, the Actiu headquarters in Castalla (Alicante) became the fifth world complex to receive the certificate Well v2 Platinum and the first industrial building in the world to add the two certifications, Leed and Well Platinumwhich credit it as a healthy and sustainable space, which ensures the well-being of people working inside it and takes care of their environment abroad.

The Well v2 Platinum Certification, awarded by the Well Building Institute (WBI), accredits through a system of points for buildings and communities to what extent these spaces are built to guarantee the health and well-being of their occupants, evaluating aspects such as lighting, temperature and even the mood of the people. This accreditation, together with the one obtained in 2017 when the company headquarters in Castalla consolidated its LEED Platinum Certification (previously Leed Oro in 2011) for the sustainable architecture of its park, make it the first industry in the world to add these two international recognitions.

“Inverting in health and well-being is investing in life. Companies need that dynamism and that human value. And that is achieved by caring for and stimulating people through space. The WELL Certification takes into account physical well-being but also emotional well-being. And all that has to do with the heart and the senses is life. Life for employees and also for companies”, explains Soledat Berbegal, Counsellor and brand reputation director in Actiu.
