The Interprofessional Organization of Cowage (PROVACUNO) shows its maximum commitment to emission reduction under the World Environment Day, which is commemorated on 5 June

“Our road map is unbreakable to make the sector more and more respectful of nature. Livestock activity is essential to maintain ecosystems and avoid forest fires, but we will continue to work to reduce greenhouse gases (GHG) drastically,” said the director PROVACUSE, Javier López.

The European Carne Vaccine sector aligns with “The European Green Pact” of the European Commission, which seeks to improve the well-being of citizens and the preservation of the environment, and which, among other objectives, seeks to ensure that Europe is climate neutral by 2050.

“The emissions that produce the annual per capita consumption of Carne de Vacuno in Spain are the same as a round trip from Madrid to Bilbao, according to the scientific studies available to us. Without cows would less methane be issued? Well, no. If there were no domestic herbivores, they would have savages and emit the same. If he hadn’t won, the dry pastures and scrubs would be the perfect match for us to suffer in summer the devastating effects of the fires on mountains and rivers and the GEI emissions that generate for the Planet,” says the president PROVACUSE, Eliseo Isla.

According to data from the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, the Vacuum Carne sector in Spain represents 3.6% of total greenhouse gas emissions, but producers and marketers have decided to assume a proactive role to ensure respect for the environment. Other benefits include the contribution of manures for the fertilization of crops, dehesas and mountains naturally.

The European producer sector works, for example, in the European program “Life Beef Carbon” to reduce at least 15% greenhouse gas emissions in the next five years. PROVACUSE has also deployed Code of Good Environmental Practicesdeveloped by a group of 17 researchers from 7 research centres belonging to the Red Remediaas a cornerstone of the Neutral Carbon Carne Vaccine 2050. The target? To achieve climate neutrality that year by sequestration of carbon equivalent to greenhouse gases generated by the different production processes. “Let’s move forward quickly on our road map to achieve the goal. And we're going to get it,” she said. Eliseo Isla. Artículos de danza y ballet

Progress sustainability “It will be historic and every exercise we will take giant steps to achieve an even greener sector, which contributes to the great challenges posed by the EU and that our partners come together,” concludes Isla. The circular economy is imposed in the European companies of the sector, as waste has been avoided throughout the product value chain “from the farm to the table”.

Rural economy motor
In Spain, the Carne Vacuno is one of the key sectors for rural areas, with an efficient and sustainable production system. With 130,153 farms, 5.8 million heads, 238 sacrificial industries and 677,000 tonnes produced annually in the amount of more than 3 billion euros, the cow is third in the livestock sector in economic terms in our country. More than 132,000 direct jobs are linked to primary production, located in disadvantaged areas with negative population balance and without other viable economic alternatives. This data should be added to indirect jobs and those linked to the vital transformation to fight the “Spain Vacía”.

The consumption in households, according to the food panel of the MAPA, stood at more than 244,747 tons in the last mobile year to November 2020 in value to 2.400 million euros. From PROVACUNO they encourage a varied and balanced diet such as the Mediterranean Diet, which includes vegetables, fruits, legumes, fish, meat and dairy, without forgetting the practice of regular physical exercise.

The Interprofessional Agro-Food Organization of the Carne de Vacuno is a private, non-profit and national entity, composed of the main organizations of the production sector and the sector of the transformation/marketing for the defense of the interests of the meat sector, meeting place and discussion forum for the improvement of the situation of the sectoral food chain. Among its activities, PROVACUNO is currently immersed in the development of the information campaign “Hazte Vaquero” together with its three-year APAQ-VLAAM in Belgium (2020-2023), to strengthen the competitiveness of the European sector.
