Instructions

  • You need a griddle like flat wok to prepare chapati. In South Asian countries, especially in India, you find ‘Tawa’ for that. The main ingredients for chapati are wheat flour, gee or oil, water and salt. Though, usually chapati is made in a flat, round shape, you can prepare it in different shapes to make it attractive.
  • Firstly, put the flour in a large bowl and add a pinch of salt (salt makes chapati tastier, you can avoid it if you wish). Add water gradually and mix them up using your hands.
Add required water and continue the process until it becomes a medium firm dough. It’s better to add little bit oil or gee to make dough smooth and elastic. If the dough gets too sticky you have to add bit more flour. Now keep the dough for 20 minutes to make it softer.
  • After that, make small balls of dough using your hands. These small balls have to be rolled out in a circular shape. You can use a rolling pin and rolling board for that. You have to add little bit flour if the dough gets sticky while you roll out. Take your griddle and heat it pouring small amount oil or gee into it. Then take your rolled out dough and put it on the pan. Wait until blisters appear on its surface and Turn it over to cook the other side too.
  • Cook rest of the rolled out dough in the same way. Pour required oil or gee whenever needed so that your dough doesn’t get burned. Since the rolled out dough get dry rapidly, it’s better to roll out dough and cook them one by one. Don’t forget to slather butter or ghee on the top of hot chapati while you serve it, because it makes your chapati more delicious.
