  • Do not order- Understand! Most parents tend to give directions to their child. They tell them what to do and what not to do. Though their intention is correct, but their mannerism is wrong. You need to sit and explain to your child why exactly are you stopping or permitting him/her to do something. Rest assured, they will understand. Think from their perspective. Why should they do something they do not understand?
  • Connect with your child. Take out time from your busy schedule and sit with your child. Watch cartoons or movies together. Go out and spend some time together. This will help you both connect and children, without doubt, readily talk to people they bond with!
  • Use proper body language. Believe it or not, your body language casts an impeccable impact on your kids. When you begin to talk with your child, remember to maintain eye contact and yet make them feel comfortable. Hold their hand or rub their leg gently. This will help them relax and open up.
  • Stay simple and brief. Kids do not like to listen to long moral lectures and commands. Put what you wish to convey in a few words and tell them. If possible, try to relate it with something they understand. Examples picked up from what they see around them will surely prove beneficial.
  • Offer them rewards. The ‘carrot and stick’ theory really works! However, do not make them habitual to seek a chocolate from you every time they do something good!
  • Make them write. The more they write out what you want to talk about, the more is the possibility of their following it religiously. Setting reminders keeps the children actively engaged in understanding your meaning and thus doing as you say.
  • Talking with kids needs you to be approachable, understanding and patiently persistent. Always remember, a child is like clay. You can give it any shape you desire! After all, your kid is the most prized possession you have and talking to them is of immense value!
