How To Swaddle A Baby

Swaddling a baby is a great way of soothing and calming a cranky, colicky baby. Ensconced in the blanket the baby gets a feeling of warmth and security.

This helps your newborn not only to adjust to the new environment but also keeps him from being distressed by the hypnagogic startles and free movement.

It is important to note that swaddling a baby is advisable only for newborns that are less than a month old. After this period, restricting the baby’s movements can interfere with the development of motor development skills in the child. Moreover if the baby starts crying after being bundled up, it is best not to swaddle the baby.

Difficulty Level

Swaddling a baby is easy once you know the right technique.

Instructions

  • Choose a blanket or a thin cotton cot sheet to swaddle a baby. It should be large enough to wrap the baby. Fabrics like cotton and flannel are the best choice for baby blankets used for swaddling the newborn. Do not bundle up a baby in heavy blankets or place him in a warm room as it may cause discomfort.
  • Place the blanket on a flat surface in a diamond shape and fold down one corner of the blanket. After flipping the corner of the blanket inwards, place the baby’s head in the center of the folded portion of the blanket.
  • Pull the left hand corner of the blanket across your baby’s body and tuck it beneath the opposite arm. Make sure that the edges are securely placed under the baby’s body.
  • Now pull the bottom corner of the baby blanket over the baby’s feet and place it securely under your baby’s chin. If the blanket is too large and covers your baby’s face then it is a good idea to fold the blanket edges under the chin. This prevents the edges from flapping around the baby’s face and disturbing him.
  • Pull the other end of the blanket across the baby‘s chest and tuck it under the opposite side. You can swaddle the baby either loosely or tighten the blanket. Some babies like to have their arms and fingers free. In that case you need to tuck the blankets under the arms of the baby. When it is properly swaddled a crying baby will soon fall asleep.
